New In Singapore – Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty
Non-Surgical, Minimally Invasive, and Permanent Results for Weight Loss

Bariatric Surgery is now a well-established field in medicine, with 2 of the most common surgeries – Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy often being performed here at Obesity Docs. Despite the positive outcome from these surgeries, many steer away from it, due to patients’ worries about risks, costs and patient preference.

For this reason, Dr Shanker has extended his education and training in Bariatric Surgery to the latest, groundbreaking procedure, known as Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty. This procedure can be done under 2 hours, performed without any incisions on the body, done through a simple endoscopy, patients recover quickly and can also return home on the very same day, making this procedure also a lot more affordable as well.

Holistic Weight Management

Don’t worry, we can help you. Nowadays there are many tools that can be used to curb your hunger.

One such tool is the gastric balloon. The balloon is placed in your stomach by endoscopy and filled with saline solution.

No surgery or incisions are required. You may go home the same day.

The balloon takes away hunger pangs and gives you a feeling of fullness.

Hungry All The Time?

This is a non-surgical program where you will receive a complete checkup from the medical, physical and psycho-social aspects. After all, your health is what is really important. Losing weight is not effective if you do not gain health at the same time.

You will receive a detailed evaluation by our doctor and dietitian. We will obtain a scientific assessment of your body composition, chemistry and metabolic rate to understand you better.

The safest and most powerful approach to better health is to eat correctly and lead an active lifestyle. That is easy to say but often quite hard to do.

That’s where we come in. With many years of experience and thousands of different individuals treated successfully, we will help you with a personalized and dedicated approach to establish a healthy relationship with food and life.

Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is an option for people who cannot lose weight by other means or who suffer from serious health problems related to obesity.

Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool to control food intake.

According to the Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines, treatment of obese individuals with a body mass index greater than 32 kg/sqm is considered medical treatment, not a cosmetic intervention.

If you should require bariatric surgery, please make an appointment to see us.

Metabolic Surgery

This refers to the use of gastro-intestinal surgery to treat disorders related to excess body fat such as type 2 diabetes mellitus or high blood pressure.

Gastro-intestinal surgery alters your digestive process and helps you control your food intake and lose weight.

Almost 80% of people suffering from diabetes are able to eliminate diabetic medication completely after metabolic surgery within a year.

If you do not have diabetes but are at risk, losing weight can significantly reduce your risk of getting diabetes.

Metabolic surgery also improves the control of other metabolic disorders such as hypertension, cholesterol abnormalities, fatty liver and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Types of Procedures

Band:

A silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to act as a valve and control the amount of food entering the stomach. It forces you to take small morsels of food and chew carefully.

Sleeve (Stapling):

The stomach is stapled to reduce the amount of food it can hold. The part of the stomach that is stapled and removed is known to produce the hunger hormone “ghrelin”. Whether you eat quickly or slowly, you will feel full after a few morsels of food.

Bypass:

The gastric bypass operation is actually a combination of stomach restriction and intestinal bypass. It is designed to achieve 2 things:

1. Restriction of food intake

2. Reduced length of intestine for absorption

Because of the intestinal bypass component, you will have to take multivitamin, iron and calcium supplements for life to prevent nutritional deficiencies.

Gastric Balloon (Non-Surgical):

We also carry out endoscopic treatment for weight loss.

A silicone balloon can be placed in your stomach using a gastroscope under sedation. The balloon will need removal in 6 or 12 months (depending on the type). The balloon occupies space in the stomach and gives you a feeling of fullness, helping you to cut down your food portion sizes during mealtimes.

Dr Shanker has performed over 300 procedures by endoscopy & keyhole technique. If you should require bariatric or metabolic intervention, please make an appointment to see us.
